LSH start 2012 with resounding win
A bright and sunny but freezing cold Sunday saw most North West games cancelled but thanks to the LSH club and the ground staff the U15’s were able to entertain near neighbour and great friends Waterloo/Tyldesley on the first team pitch in front of a large a vociferous crowd.
Despite missing some senior players and carrying some injuries, Waterloo agreed to play the much favoured 13 a side game.
Suffering still from a lack of forwards, rookie Hannah Walton bravely agreed to play second row with Daisy , the front row being made up of CD, Milly and Becks with Molly playing at 8. Facing a larger and more experienced pack this would be a key area of the game as LSH needed to win good clean fast ball to unleash the screaming pace outside.
In the first minute the LSH pack laid down a marker of their intention when ferocious counter rucking, the sort we normally seem to do only in training. This saw Daisy, Milly, Becks and spectacularly Molly, physically eject the Waterloo pack from their own ball, the resultant ball being whipped out to the flying Scouse Mouse to score.
The first half was dominated by the forwards winning all the ball and unleashing the backs with Whippet, Ferret, Lucy and Rach Woosey all scoring tries and golden boots Lucy Carrigg converting them all.
Many sides would simply have crumbled under the onslaught but Waterloo bravely stuck to the task and as the game progressed offered more and more threat particularly at the breakdown.
The second half saw the introduction of highly-rated Zoe who made an immediate impact in the centres, she really is a ball of energy with good hands and feet...and another fantastic young prospect.
Regretfully, a recurring injury to that same troublesome knee saw the withdrawal of CD as a preventative measure. This resulted in a mass rearrangement of the already depleted pack and saw the Mouse come into the front row and Rach Woosey move from the wing to the second row, there was no loss of unity and Waterloo continued to be driven back at the set piece.
A further four tries followed scored by Ferret, Rach, Mouse and young Hannah Walton with Whippet and Lucy scoring a conversion apiece.
But the thing which stood out today , other than some ferocious tackling by Hannah Montana, Molly, Daisy and Becks in particular, was the coming of age of the younger players , with Becks, Milly, Daisy, Hannah’s, Robyn, Nicole all taking a full part in both winning the ball and scoring the points.
It is encouraging when the coaches struggle to name a man of the match, yes, we were all a bit game rusty, yes we weren’t quite as fit as we were in December, but we played as a team, we took the ball into contact knowing we would have support, we looked for each other and we shook off injuries and simply got on with the job in hand.
Eventually after much discussion , a unanimous decision was that the unsung heroes , those players who form the backbone of a team and do the hard unrewarding work of winning ball, supporting and simply quietly getting on with it were real stars today , and they were Becks & Daisy...well done to you both.
