LANCASHIRE COUNTY CLUBS’ VOLUNTEER AWARDS 2011
County recognises Clubs' Unsung Heros at Volunteer Awards Night
Ian Clough, Liverpool St.Helens

Ian joined the St Helens Club in 1970 and in due course, sixteen years later became a founder member of the Liverpool St Helens Club. During the last 41 years Ian has represented the club at every level from 1st XV to 5th team turning out in just about every position from wing to prop forward.

Off the field he served on the General Committee for many years and acted a Membership secretary with special responsibilities for collecting payment from serial subscription avoiders among the flotsam and jetsam of the lower sides.
Ian is not really for interminable committee meetings, he prefers to adopt a practical ‘sleeves rolled up, hands on’ sort of role particularly in ensuring that pitches are prepared, including weeding, feeding, seeding, mowing and marking. He carries out all those minor and sometimes not so minor and often dirty jobs and repairs to the clubhouse which no one else wants to know about and which, basically, prevent the building from falling down.

Unpaid groundsman and ‘Mr Fixit’ and he never complains! At his advanced age he is still playing in the third team, when they let him and when they do not, he runs touch. We all could do with more like him.
